Do-It-Yourself Koi Pond

This week I decided to make our own koi pond at home. My wife insisted that it would look nice if we do. Well… how could I resist this new challenge. So I decided to locate the nice place to put up our very own koi pond. It’s not so hard to do this since we already have a triangle shaped area at the corner of our lot. All I have to do is dig out all the soil in it. Before everything else, I rushed to our computer to research on “How to make a koi pond”. I stumbled to lots of websites on how to do it. At first it says, you have to be very sure on what you do coz it’s permanent. Well, if it would be a concrete pond it might as well be permanent, hehehehehe. Anyways as I continued to research I learned that Kois like deep pond for them to grow big. It would be at least 3 to 4 feet deep and it should be wide enough for them to swim freely. Of course, the filtration system. It’s complicated as it sounds but with a little “know how” you should also need to plan the layout of the filtration system.

And so, I took out our newly purchased shovel and my father’s old wheelborrow and start digging out the soil of the triangle shaped area (to get a clear picture of what I mean, I will post the picture soon). Three feet deep of digging is quite hard specially when you are doing it alone hehehehehe. Alas!!! with lots of digging and resting (hehehehe) it’s done!! I dug a 3 foot deep hole. Well it was a relief at first but when I researched more on this project I found out that there are things you have to consider. First is the pond itself, it should be waterproofed. As I browsed throught the internet, I found out that that it’s either put a liner under the pond or add a waterproof mix in the concrete to make it waterproof. Either of the two would be good but it’s up to you to decide. As for now, I am stomped on what to do next. Anyways this blog will be updated every now and then as I go along with my “DIY (Do It Yourself) Koi Pond”. Ciao for now.
