Wix vs. WordPress

While many people opt for WordPress when it comes to designing a website, Wix is also moving up in the web design space, leaving people wondering – which is the better option?

In this article, we discuss both the tools in detail and determine which one is more suited for web design

A Quick Summary

Both Wix and WordPress are great tools for building a site, but they couldn’t be more different from each other. While Wix is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) website builder, WordPress is a content management system. So while the former is easier to use, it is limited in terms of customization. It also includes hosting, which means it takes away the hassle of setting up a web host, but that also means you can’t move your site to a different host.

Other differences include:

  1. Wix has a drag-and-drop editor, which adds to its ease of use, while the WordPress editor doesn’t display the entire page in the editor.

  2. WordPress is an open-source platform with a plethora of themes and plugins, but they can be tricky to implement. Meanwhile, Wix has numerous easy-to-use templates, but once you choose a template, you can’t switch it unless you’re willing to redesign your site.

  3. Wix is more for beginners and doesn’t require a lot of coding or even technical expertise. On the other hand, WordPress is better if you’re more comfortable with code and want more flexibility and power.

Which is better for web design?

Well, to put it simply, it really depends on what you’re looking for. There’s no one best solution for all; you’ll have to evaluate that for yourself. And to help you with that, here’s our detailed comparison of the two tools:

Customization & Design

Generally, people find Wix better than WordPress for design, but the customization is limited. The former has more than 800 easy-to-edit, stunning templates, while the latter has more customization tools. So what’s best for you comes down to what you’re looking for.

If you think you can manage to create a website from a completely blank canvas, you can go for WordPress. But we can’t deny that Wix provides more flexibility.

Regardless of the plan you choose, you get 800+ Wix templates for free. To make things easier, they’re further categorized according to industry and are even pre-populated with dummy content so that you get a better idea of what your website will look like. The beautiful templates are also very intuitive to navigate for any visitor. But given their focus is geared towards beginners, mid-level and even professional web designers might find Wix somewhat limiting.

On the other hand, WordPress allows the ultimate customization – there’s literally no limit. Apart from 200+ WordPress-made themes & 5000+ third-party, WordPress-approved themes, you can choose from 55,000+ plugins and play around and design your website however you like. You can use some of the in-house themes for free, but if you really want to improve the aesthetics of your website, you will have to spend somewhere up to $300 to get a premium theme.

However, it’s important to mention that greater customization means that designing with WordPress is comparatively more complex.

Plugins & Apps

We believe that both tools are excellent for plugins. When it comes to Wix, a dedicated development team controls and tests everything, so you get higher quality. But WordPress provides you with a plethora of options to choose from.

Wix has more than 300 apps (both free and paid) that you can easily add to your website with just a few clicks. You can also browse through the different categories and find exactly what you’re looking for. The editor makes it very easy to manage your apps. The user-friendly dashboard also keeps everything streamlined, and you can quickly access all the links.

And the best part is that you don’t need to worry about the hassle of installing the apps. Each app is ready to be integrated with Wix sites. Even if you use a third-party app, you don’t need to worry about it. Wix reviews them all to ensure they are in line with their guidelines so integration won’t be a problem.

On the other hand, WordPress is open-source, as mentioned earlier, so any developer can create plugins for users to download or buy. This is why you get to choose from 55,000+ plugins, so you’re bound to find the tool you want. But since there’s no vetting process in place, you will have to try them on your own or read up reviews online to know if a particular plugin is good enough.

Ease of use

Wix is definitely the winner in this regard.

It allows you to drag and drop nearly everything ranging from buttons and shopping carts to pictures, paragraphs, and even slideshows. Resizing the different elements is also super easy and just involves a few clicks.

And what sets it apart from WordPress is that you can see how the different elements will appear on your live website in real-time. But of course, there are limitations. For instance, you can’t design a template from scratch, but it should be kept in mind that Wix is targeted more toward those without any technical experience or coding background.

Meanwhile, with WordPress, you have to save each edit and then preview it to see how things look. While editing, the editor renders the elements very differently than how they’ll look on your live website. And while coding is not really necessary, especially if you use drag-and-drop website tools with WordPress, knowing at least some HTML helps.

So what should you choose?

As you can see, both tools have their benefits and drawbacks, and it is up to you to decide which one to go for. In our opinion, if you’re a beginner with no technical background and want a very basic site, then Wix is just fine for you. But if you want to design your own website with unlimited customization or want to make a full-fledged e-commerce site, WordPress is the way to go.
